I'm Headin' Out

I’m headin’ out today for a long Memorial Day weekend. Can you guess where I’m going? Yes, our nation’s capital city, Washington D.C.!

I believe our capital city is another ingredient into the mix that makes America great. What about you?

Actually I’m heading to Annapolis to the Naval Academy to witness the marriage of a very special young lady. She is marrying a graduate of the Naval Academy on Saturday in the chapel on the Academy grounds. While we are that close we will be exploring Washington D.C. on the fly as well as attempting to track down a statue I wrote about here. I just have to get a picture of it.

I hope to be able to update each day while I’m gone to let you see where I’ve explored that day.

So, tell me…..if you had one day in D.C. where you go and why?

Happy Wednesday, and don’t forget to vote for me over at the Best of Blogs. You can vote once each day through the 26th. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to vote.

Visit the Wordless Wednesday hub here.

I grew up there and I still go crazy when I go back. Where wouldn't you go?

You can't cover the entire Smithsonian but since you are into American history, you could hit the American history one. But it will suck up all your time.

Last September, I took a working trip and in two afternoons, I got three people who had never been to Washington to the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, outside the White House, the Washington Monument, and Arlington National Cemetery. I was lame because we walked almost the entire way. I wanted to go down to Mount Vernon, but we didn't have enough time.
I didn't go to the Holocaust Museum because I just didn't think I could bear it.

Annapolis is great, too.

I just love Washington. Have a great time.

Ask the Tour Marm, too.

It's Memorial Day Weekend and I observe it the following ways:

One of my favorite things is to walk around and visit with the veterans and their families who are part of Rolling Thunder. You'll find literally thousands of bikers all around the National Mall paying their respects to fallen comrades as well as finding long-lost friends they had served with. I like to listen to their thoughts and stories.

The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial becomes a veritable altar with offerings to fallen heroes. Poignant letters and items line the paths. I watch folks making rubbings of the names on the memorial.

On Memorial Day, I get up really early and go to the Presidential Wreath-laying - getting a seat in the memorial Ampitheatre for the service after the actual wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Servicemen. (I know a secret place to sneak in.)

After the ceremony, I wander around the cemetery stopping at various gravesites and monuments - including my grandfather's (in the Spanish American War section). Presidential Wreaths are all around at special monuments (like the USS Maine) with the President's calling card attached to the ribbon.

There is a U.S. flag in front of every grave.

On a more personal note, I am off during this week and wish you would contact me. It would be my pleasure to give you a tour of Arlington - or D.C.

You have my email.

I love D.C., if I had a chance to go back and could visit only one place I guess it would be the Whitehouse. Although we drove by it we didn't have a chance to go inside.

The Capitol is wonderful, I think it was probably my favourite place.

I am going to D.C. at the end of June for the first time ever. I am very excited, even though flying is so not my thing.

Anyway onto your question. I am looking forward to seeing the Lincoln Memorial. Whenever I have seen pictures of this, it has always been with a true sense of awe. I would imagine that this feeling will only be magnified when I get to see it in person.

I also want to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. My dad was in the Navy during the Vietnam War. I want to be able to take pictures for him and to honor those who served our country so honorably during a time when it wasn't easy to do so.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. We arrived late Thursday night and visited the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials last night as well as Union Station for a late dinner.

Tour Marm, thank you so much and I will try to send you an email. The WIFI at our hotel isn't being as cooperative as I would like regarding posting and emailing. We are mainly up this way for a wedding over at the Naval Academy in Annapolis so that will take up the majority of our time.....

We did make it out to Arlington this morn. (Fri) and it was great. I'll be sharing more about our trip in upcoming posts.
